So today I pulled out my Katie Jump Kites quilt top in the hope that I could get inspired to come up with a clever pieced back to match it. I got a huge surprise to find that it was large enough to spread over the queen bed in my sewing/guest room. It measures a whopping 65" x 73"! It's supposed to be a throw quilt for the couch.
Then I got out my Katie Jump Rope leftovers. I had quite a bit more than I thought. I laid out the smaller scraps left from cutting the top. Quite a lot of them were rectangular pieces around 3 1/2" in width. What to do with rectangles? That idea kept niggling in my brain as I pulled out what grey solids that I had to use for the main colour of the quilt back.
Unfortunately I did not have a great deal of the darker grey, which I would love to use for the whole quilt back. I have no idea what the shade is called and any attempt to find my Kona Solids colour chart proved fruitless. It was not even wide enough to use but I was happy to use one of special Denyse Schmidt fat quarters that Simone from Local Honey Crafts was generous enough to send me for entering her UFO Challenge in July. It matches perfectly.

By now I was getting excited about how it was coming together. Katie Jump Rope is my favourite Denyse Schmidt release. It is such a happy and vibrant collection. I have added a few prints from other collections to get a bit of variety though.
I still have to piece a few more strips but I am happy with how it is coming together.
Don't forget about the 'Kate Spain' charm pack give-away happening if you link up to this week's Sunday Stash (open until 8pm Saturday night Australian Eastern Standard Time). So far we have 12 ladies linked in so they are pretty good odds for a win.

ReplyDeleteI adore your Katie quilt. It's bright and fresh and beautiful! With so much piecing on the back I think you will have two beautiful quilt tops and whoever uses the quilt will have a hard time deciding which side to have up! Beautiful!
